Your Coffee Is Probably Filled With Mold

One of the biggest differences between specialty coffee and average (or uh…bad) coffee is also one of the simplest. It’s clean!

The majority of coffee pots and coffee systems have mildew and build up from months or even years of neglect. In fact, studies have shown that a coffee pot is one of the moldiest appliances in the American kitchen. People and business owners (you’d be surprised) too often don’t know how to properly clean their equipment and inadvertently serve drinks that are…uh…yucky.

What does this mean for coffee crafters? Clean your equipment! Espresso equipment should be properly flushed daily with certain maintenance every 3-6 months depending on the busyness of the cafe. At home, Mr Coffee pots or Keurigs should be properly cleaned at least monthly.

What does this mean for coffee consumers? Try to gauge the type of shop your visiting. Third wave coffee shops most likely keep on top of this stuff.

You can really taste the difference! Besides, mildew in a mug doesn’t sound too appetizing.
